The Sacra di San Michele 5 Minutes from Your Den
From the window of La Tana del Ghiro you can see it. Up there, clinging to the rock of Mount Pirchiriano, there it is: the Sacra di San Michele, the symbol of Val Susa and one of Italy’s most magical places.
It’s not just a monument, it’s the inspiration for "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco.
Why you must see it:
It’s an abbey from 983 A.D., built at 962 meters of altitude. Walk up via the monks’ path (30 min through gorgeous woods) or in 5 minutes by car from Condove. Once up there, the view stretches from Turin across the whole Val Susa. At sunset it’s something you won’t forget.
How far it is from us:
- 5 minutes by car from the via ferrata.
- 55 minutes on foot via the historic trail starting from Sant’Ambrogio
- Free parking at the base
Many of our guests come for the Sacra and then discover that staying overnight in Condove costs half of Sant’Ambrogio, with more peace and private parking.
Local tip (Denis):
Go early in the morning at 8:00, there are few people. Then come back down and I’ll have lunch ready for you with a view. If you want, I can book the guided tour for you.

The farmhouse that hosts La Tana del Ghiro is over 100 years old.
Pietra di Condove stone, wooden beams, thick walls that keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. We restored it with love, keeping the old soul of the mountain farmhouse but adding all today’s comforts.
We are in Via Fucine Inferiori 3, in Condove, the last authentic hamlet of the Lower Val Susa. Here you don’t hear cars, you hear the stream and the bells. You’re a 3-minute walk from a bar, bakery and pizzeria, but it feels like you’re in the middle of the woods.
Why did we create La Tana del Ghiro?
Because after years of traveling around Val Susa, we wanted a small, intimate place, where whoever arrives feels at home. Not a cold hotel, but a den. Warm, quiet, yours.
The dormouse is the symbolic animal of Val Susa: it sleeps a lot, lives in cozy dens and wakes up only for the beautiful things. Just as we’d like you to do here.
